Well Pump Repair & Replacement Cost in Chesterfield, VA
What will well pump work cost in Chesterfield County? Nobody publishes a reliable local average, so this page gathers the national cost guides, each labeled with its source and date, and breaks them into parts, labor and service calls. Six worked examples show how those pieces add up, and a short section covers the fees that come from the county and the state rather than the contractor.
The one Chesterfield figure, and its limits
HomeAdvisor keeps a page for well pump repair or service in Chesterfield, VA. It lists an average of $830, a low of $200 and a high of $2,080, plus a "typical range" of $0 to $1,491 that doesn't square with its own low figure. The page shows no date and no count of jobs behind the numbers, so treat it as a rough signal rather than a local benchmark. Everything else on this page is national.

Labor, house calls and after-hours rates
Hourly labor shows up at $45 to $150 in both HomeServe's and HomeAdvisor's guides. For a whole replacement, HomeAdvisor puts labor at $250 to $1,000 and Bob Vila at $250 to $800. A house call alone runs $100 to $150, or as much as $300 under flat-rate pricing, according to HomeAdvisor's 2022 guide, which also says after-hours and weekend rates usually double. When the water goes out on a Saturday night, ask what waiting until Monday would save before you decide.
Six worked examples
Each example adds up published national figures only. Your contractor's price may land outside every one of them.
1. A control box after a thunderstorm
HomeAdvisor lists a control box at $200 to $500. If a $100 to $150 house call is billed on top, the total comes to roughly $300 to $650. On a weekend, the doubled rate HomeAdvisor describes could push the labor share well past that.
2. Just the pressure switch
The part is $20 to $40, and HomeAdvisor's installed price is $120 to $180. Bob Vila's $50 to $150 range overlaps it. It's among the cheapest fixes in these guides, so it's worth ruling out early.
3. A submersible replaced in a drilled well
The guides overlap between about $1,000 and $2,500: American Home Shield puts a replacement at $1,000 to $2,500, This Old House $900 to $2,500 for a typical replacement, and HomeAdvisor a $1,899 average. HomeServe's top end reaches $4,000. Disinfecting the well afterward is required, and none of the guides prices it separately, so ask whether it's included.
4. A new tank and switch together
With HomeAdvisor's 2022 repair figures, a tank at $500 to $1,000 plus a switch at $120 to $180 comes to $620 to $1,180. With the $800 to $3,800 tank range from HomeAdvisor's replacement page and Bob Vila, the same pair lands at $920 to $3,980. The tank's size and type decide which end you're near.
5. Closing an old well you don't use
Permanently abandoning a well needs a VDH permit, and the fee is $300 under 12VAC5-620-70. None of the cost guides we checked prices the abandonment work itself, so the rest is whatever the contractor quotes for the chlorination, grouting and paperwork the regulations require.
6. Pricing a county water hookup instead
If a county line reaches your road, Chesterfield's fiscal 2027 fee schedule for a 5/8-inch single-family meter lists a $6,642 water capital cost recovery charge, $250 for the meter and $3,900 for the service line, or $10,792 together, plus an $18.08 capacity charge on each bimonthly bill. That total covers the county's published fees only. It doesn't include plumbing on your side or anything done to the old well, and the county's page doesn't address homes that already have one. Ask Utilities at 804-748-1864 whether water is available and 804-748-1862 about fees.
What moves your number
- Which part failed. A switch and a submersible are an order of magnitude apart.
- Whether the pump has to come up. Pulling a submersible adds labor, equipment and required disinfection.
- Pump type and size. HomeAdvisor's unit prices run $275 to $1,550 for submersibles, $230 to $1,000 for shallow jets and $440 to $1,200 for deep jets.
- How deep the pump hangs. More depth generally means more pipe and wire, which is worth asking about.
- Getting to the wellhead. A casing at the end of a long, muddy lane or behind a fence takes more time.
- Timing. After-hours and weekend rates usually double, per HomeAdvisor.
- Extra parts and treatment. A tank, pitless adapter or water treatment added to the job.
Fees that aren't the contractor's
VDH permit, $300. Only for building, deepening, altering or abandoning a well. A pump replacement needs none. County trade permits. Chesterfield's residential fee schedule (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027) has no well, pump or water tank item; its nearest plumbing and electrical items are $57 each, plus a 2% state levy. Whether any of them applies to a tank, switch or new circuit is the building official's decision; call Building Inspection at 804-751-4990. County water connection. The fees in example 6, if you go that route.
What the written quote should show
- The diagnosis: which part failed and how it was tested.
- Each part by make and model, including a tank's capacity.
- Labor and the service call as separate lines.
- Disinfection, if the well is opened.
- Any permit, and who pulls it.
- The warranty on parts and labor, in writing.
Cost questions
Why are the published ranges so wide?
A single "replace a well pump" figure can cover anything from a jet pump swap in a basement to a deep submersible. Matching the guide's category to your actual job narrows it.
Is it worth fixing a 20-year-old pump?
At 20 it's past the 8 to 15 years the guides give. A cheap above-ground fix can still make sense. If the repair means pulling the pump, price a replacement on the same trip too.
Does a pump replacement come with a permit fee?
Not a VDH one, and the state building code exempts a straight swap. A permit fee may come up for tank, switch or electrical work if the county decides one is needed.
Is there a cheaper rate if I wait for a weekday?
Often, since HomeAdvisor says after-hours and weekend rates usually double. Weigh that against how long the household can manage on stored water.
Is switching to county water cheaper than a new pump?
On published numbers alone, the county's fees for a new connection are several times a typical pump replacement. But it depends on whether a line is available, your plumbing, and what you'd spend keeping the well going, so get both answers before choosing.
